About FontToolbox
A font discovery platform built by someone who has worked in typography since 2001.
Why this exists
My first font site was FontGuy.com, launched in 2001. Finding a typeface then meant paging through directory listings: alphabetical categories, small preview images, basic name search. Tens of thousands of fonts online. Needle in a haystack. FontToolbox is what I always wanted that site to be.
It's a solo project. I've spent 20+ years in software engineering and have cared about typefaces for just as long.
The library
Every family has preview images, specimen sheets, a style description, and font metrics. Type your own text in the live preview before downloading.
Browse by category and tag, search by name, or use semantic search to describe a style in plain language. Type "warm humanist for a coffee brand" or "bold condensed for a film poster" and the engine matches by meaning.
Licensing
License tags (OFL, Freeware, Commercial) are extracted from each font's embedded metadata and any license files bundled in the package. Every font in the catalog is scanned. Families marked Verified have concrete source evidence confirming the license. I take font licensing seriously. It protects the people who made the fonts.
For commercial use, read the license file from the download. The tag helps with sorting; it's not legal advice. Flag a wrong license from the font page and I'll investigate. The full process is on the Licensing Trust page.
The tools
Beyond the catalog, the tools page has 5 utilities:
- Identify: upload a photo or screenshot and get font matches using per-character glyph analysis.
- Chat: describe your project and refine suggestions through conversation. Attach an image to match by style.
- Pairing: upload an image and it analyzes the font style and suggests complementary pairings with live editable previews.
- Subsetter: point it at a live URL and it scans the page to find exactly which characters are in use, then strips the font to that set and exports optimized .woff2.
- 3D text generator: turn any catalog font into printable 3D text. Export STL or 3MF.
