Novello is a transitional serif designed for legibility under difficult print conditions, including low-quality paper and small sizes. Its most distinctive trait is the replacement of the traditional curved upstroke junction on letters like a, b, d, h, n, and m with a sharp horizontal connection to the stem, giving it a near-modern crispness unusual in a serifed antiqua. Round short serifs and moderate stroke contrast keep it rooted in tradition while the construction logic pushes it toward something more rational.
